Our Saxon Coin Finds
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all
of the Weekend Wanderers members who have given me permission to display
their finds on this web page.

WWDC member Paul Banks found the coin shown below and said
..........
My coin is a Primary Sceatta. Circa 680-720. AR Sceat .
Series Z, type 66. Minted in East Anglia or Mercia. Facing bust (of
Christ?) with long beard; cross to right, blundered legend / Hound
standing right, sniffing ground; blunderd legend. Extremely Rare.

The excellent Saxon Sceat shown below was found on a recent Weekend
Wanderers dig in Bucks by Stuart Bergman

Lee Smeaton was the finder of the lovely Silver Sceat shown below
on a recent Hampshire dig, the coin looks gold instead of silver due to
the light source used in the photo

Lee tells me that this coin was found with his Goldmax power -
complete with bend in the shaft where he ran it over a couple of weeks
ago, the coin was found when checking the mud scraped off his shovel!!!!
Many thanks to James Petts for sending me the pictures below of his
Saxon penny found on our 2003 Christmas dig.
The pictures show the coin before and after careful cleaning.
Derek Critoph found the Sceat shown below on a recent WWDC dig in
Buckinghamshire

The excellent Saxon Sceat shown below was found on a recent Weekend
Wanderers dig by James Petts.

Thanks to Wanderers member Tim Hurst for the picture below showing a
very nice Saxon he found on a recent club dig.

The coin has been identified as an Eadgar (957 - 75) pre reform type (c972) circumscription cross
BMCiii (North 748), obverse (double struck) +EADGAR REX ANGLO rev. ELFISH
O WINT (WINCHESTER)
WWDC member Peter Brown found the coin pictured below recently. He
believes it to be an early Anglo-Saxon silver sceatta.

Can you positively ID this coin.
Many thanks to Steven Fenton for the excellent picture below which
shows a Saxon sceat. Steven found this coin in The River
Thames in Middlesex, it was found with a Viking 5 when Steven had
only been detecting for 2 hours, it was his first ever try at detecting,
What a first find !!!!

The excellent Saxon Sceat shown below was found on a recent Weekend
Wanderers dig by James Petts

The Sceat shown below was kindly sent in by its finder John Raeburn.

John included a 1p piece in the picture to give you an idea of the size
of this coin. The sceat which John found two years ago
on a Wanderers dig is still the best one I have seen to date. The
Sceat dates between 710 and 760 AD (Seabys 811).
Many thanks to Colin for sending me the pictures below of his recent
find along with the information below.

The coin is of the Helmet Type Cnut Penny and was struck
at the Lincoln mint around 1016 AD. The reverse reads +PULBARN MO
LINC. Wulbarn appears to be a version of Wulfbeorn, a known moneyer
for this reign. There are other versions of spelling but Wulbarn (PVLBARN)
seems to be one of the rarest. There are two examples with this
spelling in the Royal Collection, Copenhagen, and there was another
example in the H. R. Mossop collection prior to its dispersal. This
coin may well be only the second recorded example from this pair of
dies. The coin looks as if it is in near VF condition.
Neil Fazackerley sent me the scan below of his latest Saxon find, this
time a coin of Edward the confessor.

Well done and thanks Neil.
The two coins pictured below were found by WWDC member Neil on one of
our weekend digs.

Neil tells me that both of the coins are late Anglo Saxon and of King
Aethelred 2nd ( The Unready ) and are dated from 978 - 1016. 2 wonderful
finds, well done Neil and thanks for sharing them with us.
We had a particularly good weekend for finds this weekend and
Thank You to all the members who have permitted me to show a few of
their finds below.
The pictures above show the obverse and reverse of a Saxon from
the reign of Eadred 946 - 955 AD
